Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
