Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
