The total count of fatalities from the UPS cargo plane that burst into flames and crashed has reached 13, according to recent announcements.
Mayor's Statement
“On my way to the Union’s vigil, I received word of a thirteenth victim that passed away as a consequence of the plane crash,” stated the local official in a public communication. “My thoughts is with the families, companions and co-workers of all who were lost in this week’s calamity. We will overcome this as one.”
Victims Identified
A release from UPS named the officers aboard the jet as Captain Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.
“Our hearts reach out to all UPSer who has been impacted and all in our local region – assisting you and making sure you receive the support and assistance you need is our main concern,” the company’s message stated.
Inquiry Findings
Federal authorities revealed that the jet’s left wing caught fire and an power plant detached soon after takeoff from the Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport, causing the jet to fall and explode into a inferno.
The NTSB announced it is probing the aircraft’s upkeep logs, which was in the state for repairs weeks prior to the accident.
Aircraft records showed the jet was on the ground in that location from 3 September to mid-October.
“We are knowledgeable that this jet was there in San Antonio,” stated an NTSB member on later, without a specific period. “We will look at each aspect of maintenance that was performed, from the Texas period, all the way to the time of the journey.”
Recovery of Vital Items
The pilot’s recorder and flight data recorder were found, and the power plant was located on the runway.
The devices – known as data containers – were designed to survive accident forces and intense fire from fires, and they looked to be undamaged when discovered within the wreckage. Investigators plan on reviewing information from the devices.
The plane’s concluding recorded information indicated an altitude of that level and a velocity of 210 miles per hour before the impact.
Repair History
Per Federal Aviation Administration documents dated last month, a fissure on a component inside the tank area needed fixes.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which indicated it supplies structural repairs for the carrier’s jet and manages a maintenance center in that city, refused to speak, but stated it would work closely when investigators contacted it.
Services Resume
In the meantime, UPS Worldport activities continued Wednesday night with its overnight or nighttime process, representative Jim Mayer said. The three landing strips at the aviation hub were also reopened.
The UPS package handling facility in the city is the company’s largest. The facility employs over a large number of people in the area, handles 300 trips daily and processes over 400,000 items an hour.
Community Response
A gathering was held on the night of 6 November by the local Teamsters Union, which supports staff at the aviation hub, the firm’s biggest air cargo hub.
Worker representatives, which represents UPS workers, started the memorial with a period of reflection at the evening hour, the rough moment of the incident two days earlier.
“This tragedy was so sudden, so unexpected,” the mayor addressed the crowd of 200. “No one had a opportunity to say goodbye to each of those who we have lost.”
