British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
